Endodontics

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontics, is a procedure needed to repair and save a badly damaged or infected tooth instead of removing it. This treatment of the tooth aims at removing infection as well as protecting the tooth from subsequent infection.

Endodontics involves the complete removal of the infected tissue that lies inside the pulp chamber and root canals. The hollow area is then cleaned, sealed and filled with a biocompatible material called Gutta Percha, to ensure complete sealing of the root canal.

Following the root canal treatment a filling or crown is usually placed on the tooth to protect it, as root canal treated teeth are more fragile than normal teeth. Once the procedure is complete the patient is able to retain their natural tooth for a prolonged period of time.
